As one can readily see, this Psalm is structured differently from the others. Each line is followed by the praise phrase “His love endures forever.” It seems that this was a common method of singing for the Hebrews at the time this was written. One person would read (or chant) a line and the entire congregation would respond w ith the following phrase. The idea is that the praise phrase is a response to the statement that has been made. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. Why is the Lord so good to us? It is because His love endures forever. God is described to us in a lot of different ways but there are few things that the Bible says that God is. However, we are told that “God is love”. Not just that he loves or is loving but God is love. When we consider the greatness of God – as shown in these verses today – we see that God made us because he wanted to love us. He set everything in its order for our good because he loves us. Paul tells us in Ephesians that before the world began (was created) God knew that man would rebel and sin against him so he devised a plan to send his Son to die for our sin, in our place. Why? “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17) It is no wonder then that the love God would tell us that the most important command given is to love him above all else and the second greatest command is to love each other! God’s love gave. What does our love give him in return? What does our love give to one another? Remember, our goal is to become like him. God is love.
O Lord God, your love endures forever. From eternity past and into eternity future, your love endures forever. Melt my heart like heated wax and form it to be like you. Make me so that my legacy will be that “he was love”. I know that I can never love to the extent you love me but fill me with your wisdom so that I can know how to love you and others around me even more. Take from me and forgive my selfish heart. I pray in Jesus name.
May God bless each of us as we love like him today.
