Thoughts on Psalm 129

They have greatly oppressed me from my youth--let Israel say--2 they have greatly oppressed me from my youth, but they have not gained the victory over me. 3 Plowmen have plowed my back and made their furrows long. 4 But the LORD is righteous; he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked. 5 May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame. 6 May they be like grass on the roof, which withers before it can grow; 7 with it the reaper cannot fill his hands, nor the one who gathers fill his arms. 8 May those who pass by not say, "The blessing of the LORD be upon you; we bless you in the name of the LORD."

People are fickle. We change in so many ways and so often. As soon as we feel we can predict someone’s actions we find they have changed again. Change is not always bad nor is it always good. It depends on the change and sometimes the reason behind the change. When we change our lives to serve the Lord, this obviously is good. When we drift away from our commitment to Him and begin to serve ourselves this change is not good. As we grow (physically, mentally, spiritually, etc) we change and when we quit growing we begin to die and thus continue to change. God does not change. God is righteous. His righteousness is the same today as it was a year ago, ten years ago, 3000 years ago and if the world continues, 3000 years in the future. His love for mankind does not change and neither does His justice. His mercy remains the same as does his hatred for evil. In fact, His unchanging nature is one reason we can always depend on Him as we live in this changing world. It seems that most of society around us is changing by moving away from God but we can find peace and contentment in knowing that He does not change. Try to imagine being in Noah’s shoes (or maybe sandals) while building a huge boat (1½ times the size of a football field) on dry land to save his family from a flood when it had probably never even rained up to that time. Everyone else in the world was wicked and had turned away from God. Noah just continued to do what was right and trust his God. Yes, he tried to tell others and save them too but to no avail. His faith was based on his conviction that God is righteous and faithful – unchanging. We can and must have this same faith today as we live among a wicked society, even as we share the good news of Jesus with those around us. Praise God for His righteousness and His faithfulness.

O God, please forgive my unfaithfulness, my doubts, my worry and often my lack of true commitment to You. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I can be more like you today. Help me to be ever changing as I grow up in You and Your Son, Jesus Christ. In His name I pray.

May God bless each of us as we move ever closer to Him.
