Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. 2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and forevermore. 3 The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous, for then the righteous might use their hands to do evil. 4 Do good, O LORD, to those who are good, to those who are upright in heart. 5 But those who turn to crooked ways the LORD will banish with the evildoers. Peace be upon Israel.
While this Psalm is written specifically about Israel of old and the city of Jerusalem, there are principles that apply to us today. The first is tha t God can always be trusted. If we place our trust in him and him alone we can be like the mountains that surround Jerusalem. Years come and years go but the mountains stand strong and firm. No matter what we face in life, when God is our strength and our stronghold we cannot be shaken. It is interesting how some people face trials and it seems they crumble under the load while others seem to come out of it with an added strength. The former usually are beaten down and often bitter while the latter are full of zeal and filled with love. The difference is whether we go it alone or we place our very being in the hand of God. Do we really believe all the things we say about God? Is he really all powerful? Is his wisdom infinite? Does he really care about us, his creation? Is he really good and is he love? Is God really infinite in his knowledge? If we answer these questions with a “yes” how can we not trust him? This Psalm also gives another clue to our total trust. God will banish evildoers and not bless them. This is not the person who makes a mistake in their life. This is the one who does not regard God as God and who does not attempt to trust or serve him. Romans 1 tells us that God will give these up to their own evil desires and wickedness but God will always rescue the righteous, those who trust him and serve him. Too often we cautiously sit on the sideline of “religion” and watch others as they place their trust in God and see the blessing flow to them and wonder why we don’t have that same peace in our hearts. We need to quit trusting religion and our own service to it. We need to trust God who does all things well and cannot lie.
God, my help in time of need, my comfort in sorrow, my strength in time of weakness, I come to you today and plead that I might trust you more. I do believe in your strength and majesty and wisdom. I do know that you are love. Keep me in your care and help me grow up in you. Open my eyes that I may see your care and your protection all around me. I praise you and thank you for all you have done for me. Fill me with your Spirit. In Jesus name.
May God bless each of us as we learn to trust as little children.
