Righteous are you, O LORD, and your laws are right. 138 The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy. 139 My zeal wears me out, for my enemies ignore your words. 140 Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them. 141 Though I am lowly and despised, I do not forget your precepts. 142 Your righteousness is everlasting and your law is true. 143 Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight. 144 Your statutes are forever right; give me understanding that I may live.
One of the favorite pass-time activities of my five year old grandson is looking at the clouds in the sky and telling me what he sees. It may be anything from a beautiful flower to a ferocious bear. Some of these can be plainly seen by anyone and some are seen only by his eyes. Why is this? Some things we want to see badly enough that we see them. Other things we don’t want to see and so no matter how plain they may be to others, we just don’t see them. This is true in our lives and our relationship with God. If we all would just open our eyes to God and his activities, we would see him plainly every day. Yet, there are millions who deny his existence and many more who say they believe he is there but never see him. Instead of seeing God (who makes himself so visible to us by his tender care and bountiful blessings) we see “good luck” or “good fortune” or “coincidence” or some other man made idea. We see misfortune and wallow in self pity instead of seeing the loving discipline of our Father. We see our plans sabotaged instead of seeing God’s gentle leading. We see nature and its beauty instead of seeing God the creator and sustainer of life. Now to the point of our Psalm; how could the Psalmist be so sure that God’s laws are right, his statutes righteous and trustworthy. It was because he had trained himself to see God in his life. He had experienced the highest highs and praised God for putting him there. He had faced the most serious challenges with assurance that he would overcome in the strength of his God. He had dealt with the most grueling heartaches, all the while knowing that God would heal him and remove his pain. The more he saw God, the more obvious God was to him. The more we give God the credit in our lives, the more we will see him in our daily walk and the more we will feel his abiding presence.
Lord God, open my eyes that I might see your constant working in my life. Open my heart that I might feel your constant presence. Help me to ever give you the glory and praise for all things. Increase my faith that I might trust you in every way, knowing you are always right. Lead me in your paths so that I might show you to others. I pray in the name of Jesus.
May God bless each of us as we praise him in our lives today.
