113 I hate double-minded men, but I love your law. 114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. 115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God! 116 Sustain me according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed. 117 Uphold me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees. 118 You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their deceitfulness is in vain. 119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross; therefore I love your statutes. 120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
One of the many reasons that the Psalmist loved God and his word is because God is always dependable. He begins this section with a declaration that he hates double-minded men. But then, who doesn’t? There are few traits that are admired more than dependability. We all know people that are totally dependable. If they say it, we can count on it. Unfortunatel y we also know some whose word is doubted, no matter what they tell us. Paul tells us in 2 Tim 2:13; “if we are faithless, he will remain faithful”. God is faithful to his word because he is God. It is against his very nature to lie or be deceitful. We may fail him but he will never fail his word. We may deny him but he cannot deny himself. There are few truths more plainly stated in his word than his expectation of our faithfulness to him. He has promised that if we will serve him and live for him, he will always be faithful to sustain us and shield us from evil. However, too many of us want to live as though there is no God and no eternity and then when we get ourselves into a mess we turn to God to fix it. We ignore him and his word until we are in trouble. Turning to God in desperation and as a last resort is not the daily faithfulness he wants from us. God wants us to be faithful to him by humbly submitting to his will as revealed in his word. When I am faithful to God, I will be faithful in deed and not just in word only. My actions and my life will confirm my faith in God. I will live in submissive obedience to his word. James describes his word as a law of liberty that gives us freedom and wisdom and saves us. His word will teach us to be more faithful like him.
Lord God, please help me to submit to your will for my life. I confess that I am too often stubborn and self willed. I try to do it all myself, even though I know it is futile. Please increase my faith so that I might be faithful in my service to you. Give me the wisdom that I so desperately need to keep my eyes focused on you and your will for me. Please help me to keep my life pure. Give me strength to use my day to help others. Use me in your service that I might be a blessing to those around me. I pray in the name of Jesus.
May God bless each of us as we attempt to be faithful to him today.
