Thoughts on Psalm 119:105-112

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. 106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. 107 I have suffered much; preserve my life, O LORD, according to your word. 108 Accept, O LORD, the willing praise of my mouth, and teach me your laws. 109 Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law. 110 The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts. 111 Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. 112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

Jer. 10:23 I know, O LORD, that a man's way is not in himself; nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.

Do we really believe that the word of God is a lamp and a light to direct us? This means that we will actually let it tell us what to do. Yet, most of us try to direct our own steps. We think we can figure it out, or we do what we have always been told by tradition or heritage. Or, some of us just do the opposite of tradition or heritage because we want to be different or believe that the old way must be outdated. The fact is that as God’s children, we must be open to new ways. How can we ever grow if we don’t listen to him and follow his directions? This means change on our part. In our desire to grow and change we must not ever reject the old or tradition just because it is old or because it has been practiced by others before us. If it is God’s will and revealed in his word, then we must put it into our lives. We all use this principle with our children (and our parents used it on us). We show them a better way to do something or the correct way to behave and we expect them to accept it and change. Just because my table manners were used by my parents and theirs before them does not make them bad or improper. So we study God’s word and let it guide us and show us the way. It is his will, revealed in his word that is to be our standard and the authority for what is right and wrong.

Society does not change the will of God by its norms. Government cannot legislate and change the law of God . My will and my desires do not override God’s will and his desires for me. There is no greater demonstration of faith than when we just simply do his will because it is his will. With the light of God’s word we will find our way home to him.

O Lord God, please help me to open my heart to your will. Please give me wisdom to know how to apply what I learn from your word. Help me to open my heart and my being to be filled with your Spirit. In a special way today, I ask you to please be with those who are hurting and in need of a special blessing. I offer this prayer in the name of Jesus who died for me.

May God bless each of us as we learn and live by his will.
