Thoughts on Psalms 46:8-11 (regarding the upcoming election)

by Robert Fudge

8 Come and see the works of the LORD, the desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire. 10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." 11 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

As Election Day approaches our country we need to remember that God is in control. While some may boast of their wisdom or their accomplishment, it is the one who humbles himself before God that is truly wise. It is indeed a shame that so many in our great nation do not honor God or his word. They may be allowed by him to continue in their own course but eventually they and possibly our entire country will reap the punishment of this arrogance.

I would urge all Americans to vote and voice their convictions. This is not a campaign speech but is an attempt to see our current events from God’s viewpoint. While many have expressed that the economy is their major concern in this election, as God’s children we should not be overly concerned about it. We know that he will take care of us and provide our needs. Others have given the war as their major concern. While many do not agree on this war, God is in control of this also.

What we do need to do as Christians is vote based on principles of what God says is right morally and not allow these to be overshadowed by party affiliations, gender, race or other things that really don’t matter to God.

Secondly, we need to pray that God will give us what is best for us and that his will be done in this election. That may not be what I want or think is best but it must be my prayer and I must accept the results as God’s will.

Thirdly, we need to respect the candidates who are running for office and those who ultimately are elected. We can show this respect by not spreading rumors, true or false, and by not speaking despairingly of them. Remember they are God’s stewards in the positions they hold.

We need to exalt the LORD by giving him the glory in all things. We need to praise him for his loving care and the great blessing he bestows on each of us. We must thank him for giving us this great nation in which we live with its freedoms and abundance. But remember that the same God who gives it to us can take it from us if we do not honor him as God and give him thanks for all we have and all we are.

Dear God, our loving Father, I come to you asking that your will be done in this election that we are facing in this country. Help me to remember that we are great as a nation only because you have made us great. I ask that you give me the wisdom to make the right choice in my vote. I ask you to give wisdom to our leaders and guide them to do what is best for our country so that I may continue to have the freedoms that I now enjoy. I give you all praise, glory and honor as the only true God. In the name of Jesus I offer this prayer.

May God bless each of us and our country as we put him first in our lives and live for him.
