Thoughts on Psalms 37:1-6

by Robert Fudge

Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong;
2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.
3 Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
4 Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this:
6 He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

David, like us had to watch when evil people seemed to have all the luck. It seems that all they do turns to money or they are blessed without cause. What David realized was that God is still in control. While the wicked may prosper now, there is a time of reckoning that is coming.
But even more than this, we need to not waste our time and life in jealousy. So what if they have more than I do? So what if they don’t face the troubles that I face? (Actually, they probably do.) What I need to realize is that God is taking care of me. It may be that I don’t have more because I don’t use what God has given me to His glory or He knows that it would be a temptation that I could not bear. Whatever the case, I can know that God knows what is best for me.

My responsibility to God is to trust Him in all my life. That means that whatever I face, God is there with me and for me. I must commit my way to the Lord. If He chooses to give me more, then I should be thankful for the abundance. If He chooses to hold back (for my own good) I should be thankful that He is doing what is best for me. Jesus said for us to seek first His righteousness and His kingdom and all the material things we need will be provided.

But it is not just about money. Those who don’t want or need children seem to have plenty of them while some very good people cannot enjoy that privilege. The same thing is true for that promotion at work or that position we want to hold in some organization or… you fill in your desire. I can either live in resentment which will destroy my life or be thankful that God knows what is best for me. That does not mean that I quit working to make more money or continue to try to have children, or try to achieve whatever it is that I am pursuing, it just means that I trust God to take care of the results. Are you living with resentment toward others? If so, ask God to take it away. If we trust God and allow His love to fill our hearts, the resentment will vanish. We cannot be filled with God’s love and feel resentment toward anyone.

Lord God, please fill my heart with your love. Help me to allow your Spirit to change my heart and do away with the bitterness and resentment that I have allowed to come into my life. Thank you for all you have given me and for all you have done for me. Thank you for withholding the things that I do not need, even when I think I want them. Help me to trust you more. In the name of Jesus, my Lord and my savior, I offer this prayer.

May God bless each of us as we live for Him.
